Research Unit: Engineered Composites Sciences

Softening of Biomass and Its Effect on Fuel Pellet Production Primary Goals: Understand relationships between materials, process, and performance to engineer biocomposites that benefit users while promoting sustainability of both virgin and recycled forest resources.

Engineered wood and other bio-based composites developed through this research provide improved value, service-life, and utility to consumers, while promoting sustainability and recycling. Biocomposite technologies can be manufactured into highly engineered building products using low-value natural resources. This helps offset the costs of thinning operations needed to improve forest health. Composites present an opportunity to promote jobs in rural communities that depend on forest resources for economic health.

Research focuses on enhancing traditional composites while developing next-generation biocomposites. These will provide construction and building products far exceeding current expectations while opening new markets and reducing environmental impacts.
