Abstract: Cross-laminated timber (CLT), which is a transformative construction material, has gained increasing interest in North America among timber producers, engineers, researchers, and other stakeholders because of its high strength, rapid installation, and sustainability. Although CLT has been widely applied to building system in the United States, it has not been used in bridges along the nation’s roadways. CLT has great potential to promote wood product markets in transportation structures, particularly bridges on low-volume roads, such as rural or forest roads. More than 25% of U.S. bridges are structurally deficient, and most of these are located on low-volume road networks. Such deficient bridges must be replaced soon with some alternative. As a long-term sustainable and economic solution for replacing these bridges, a bridge system made with CLT is needed now for public safety and to expand demand for wood products in support of the economic and environmental health of communities.
