Abstract: Urban areas generate woody biomass from tree removals, yet the harvested wood is typically underutilized or considered waste. Investigating the urban wood supply chain will reveal the potential for wood harvested from urban areas to be converted to high-value wood products such as commercial lumber. The use of urban wood biomass can provide environmental and economic benefits. Harvesting and processing of lumber from freshly cut urban wood differ from traditional harvesting in methods used and scale of operations. An environmental life-cycle assessment (LCA) for lumber production from freshly cut urban trees can provide information on environmental impacts associated with this wood supply chain. The study will focus on three selected metropolitan areas in the United States: Baltimore, Maryland; Madison, Wisconsin; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Results can be used to identify areas with high environmental impact and improve sustainability of urban forest management.
