Abstract: 

 

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a structural mass timber product constructed by gluing dimensional lumber in perpendicular layers to final thicknesses of three- to nine-ply. Due to its design properties, a single CLT panel is strong enough to function as an entire wall, floor, ceiling, or roof. Structurally, these panels can bear enough weight to compete in the multi-story or mid-rise (approximately 5- to 15-story) construction sector. Moreover, with growing interest and support from stakeholders in the forest products, structural engineering, architecture, and construction industries, standards for CLT products have been developed. However, the scope of published studies and current product standards is limited to dry service conditions. Damage from flooding ranks number one in property claims in the United States (an estimated $1.4 billion per year (University of Colorado [n.d.]), and climate change appears to increase the severity and frequency of extreme weather events. Therefore, the response of CLT to flooding from the structural performance and serviceability perspectives is a research need that must be addressed.
