Abstract: Wildland fires are a significant societal problem, and how to contain and mitigate the hazard associated with these fires is not well understood. Specifically, wildland fires along the wildland–urban interface (WUI) pose a threat of ignition to structures. Currently, some building codes and standards for new construction aim to decrease the risk of structural ignition. However, most of these codes and standards were based on “best available information,” and often that information was anecdotal. One scenario that results in property loss in the WUI is ignition of attached wood decks. The goal of this project is to understand the fundamental mechanisms of fire transfer between a structure and the attached deck.
