Abstract: Mass timber is a rapidly expanding market in North America and offers promise as a sustainable, high-strength, carbon-neutral form of construction. Cross-laminated timber (CLT), the most popular form of mass timber, utilizes dimensional lumber laid in perpendicular layers that are adhered with adhesives. The dimensional lumber within the CLT is untreated and typically manufactured from moderately durable to nondurable wood species (Douglas-fir and southern pine). These species would benefit from preservative treatments when exposed in areas of moderate to severe fungal decay potential and in areas with subterranean termites. Indeed, we are starting to see some durability problems with CLT structures (Austigard and Mattsson 2019). Conventional CLT is manufactured in 20- to 40-ft panels, which do not lend themselves to feasible options for pressure treatment. Preservative treatment options for CLT need to be developed and tested so that CLT technology can be successfully deployed in areas with termite and decay hazards (Wang et al. 2018).
