Abstract: Wood’s superior properties, such as light weight, high strength, sustainability, and favorable aesthetics, make it an indispensable building and construction material. However, intrinsic drawbacks, such as susceptibility to biological decay, limited dimensional stability, and deterioration by weathering, hamper expansion into wider construction markets. Given the rapid market penetration of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in building and construction, the development of novel coating methods that enhance weathering and decay resistance of CLT are needed to improve marketability.

Keywords: Cross-laminated timber; thermal spray coating; surface modification; weathering; decay resistance
